Traveling basketball refers to teams organized through a competitive tryout process that compete against similar teams from other communities. Traveling basketball programs organize around high school boundaries and often serve as feeder programs for the local high school teams.
The traveling basketball season runs from late October through early March. Teams play in weekend tournaments against other traveling teams from the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota. Most tournaments take place in the Twin Cities, with a few in places such as Duluth, St. Cloud, Mankato and Rochester.
Teams organize by grade and skill level. Players in grades 4 through 8 may participate in traveling basketball. Players may compete on A, B or C teams.
The cost to participate in traveling basketball is approximately $250 per year.
Registration takes place in late August and early September. Tryouts occur in mid or late September. Teams begin practicing in late October. Teams practice two nights per week. Practices run though mid March.
